Roger Federer outlasted hard-serving Milos Raonic 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4 under the lights in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday night, extending his run of winning 35 of 37 matches since last year’s U.S. Open.

Rafael Nadal didn’t have as much trouble in sunny conditions, beating countryman Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-4.

It was similarly easy on the women’s side for top-ranked Victoria Azarenka and No. 2-seeded Maria Sharapova, who won their matches in just more than an hour to reach the quarterfinals.

Ana Ivanovic defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-2 in a matchup of former Indian Wells champions and former top-ranked players. Ivanovic served out the match with a 40-love game to complete her biggest win over a top player in months.

“I was really looking for opportunities, and trying to come in as well whenever I had chance,” Ivanovic said, “and trying to step in from both sides and trying to stay calm in my serve and execute the way I was executing in practice. I really managed to do that well.”

Wozniacki’s loss ensured she will drop out of the No. 4 spot in next week’s rankings, while keeping the tournament without a back-to-back women’s winner since Martina Navratilova in 1990-91.

“She just went on a roll. She started to hit the ball harder and it was going in,” Wozniacki said. “I stepped back a little bit, and it gave her the time to do what she wanted.”

Raonic came into his first match against Federer having won 16 of his previous 18 matches this year, but he fell to 0-7 against top-eight players with the loss.

“I thought before the match I had a chance to win this,” he said. “I did a few things well in the first set, and after that he just picked it up on the return. I don’t think I served as well after, either.”

Federer broke to open the second set and broke again in the seventh game to even the match. In the third, he broke Raonic to go up 4-3. Raonic held at love to get to 5-4 before Federer won four straight points to close out his 73rd consecutive win against a player outside the top-20.

Federer hasn’t been feeling well since he arrived, blaming sickness among his family rather than the viral illness that has knocked eight players out of the tournament.

“Slow improvements,” he said. “I’m still not 100 percent.”

Nadal, ranked second in the world, has won his past 10 matches against fellow Spaniards, and 22 of his past 23 sets against them. Granollers, who has risen from 50th to 26th in the rankings over the past year, cracked a 132-mph serve during the match, but he couldn’t overcome Nadal’s quickness and touch.

Nadal served out the match in a deuce game, then drew cheers from female fans when removed his shirt and toweled off courtside before donning a warm-up jacket.

“I didn’t play my best in the second,” he said. “I had a few mistakes, especially for the backhand. But I am happy that I finished the match well.”

Nadal plays No. 21 Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarterfinals.

Sharapova, who lost to Azarenka in the Australian Open final, beat Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-1, and next plays an all-Russian quarterfinal against 20th-seeded Maria Kirilenko, who beat No. 30 Nadia Petrova 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.

“I was pretty solid and I think my pace didn’t allow her to come forward as much as she would have liked,” Sharapova said of Vinci.

On the men’s side, fifth-seeded David Ferrer lost for just the second time this year, 6-4, 6-3 to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Ferrer had already won three titles this season, and was seeking his 20th match win.

Istomin set himself up for a fourth-round match against No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro, who defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 7-6 (6). Verdasco failed to convert on six break points in the match.

“Verdasco is a really difficult opponent, especially in the beginning of the big tournaments,” Del Potro said. “He’s very, very tough, very dangerous, and I think I made a good match. I got lucky in the second set when I save five set points, and then in the tiebreak he made the double-fault to give me the first match point.”

David Nalbandian defeated 10th-seeded Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while Thomaz Bellucci advanced when Nikolay Davydenko withdrew because of illness. There was no immediate confirmation whether Davydenko was suffering from the same viral illness that has swept through the Coachella Valley.

“If I relax my butt a little bit, somebody’s going to come and kick it,” she said, laughing.

Azarenka, who has won two other titles this year, is 3-0 against Radwanska this year, with two of their matches going to three sets.

“She’s someone who always comes up with something different,” Azarenka said. “She’s a little magician, if you can call it that.”

Azarenka beat Radwanska in straight sets last month in Doha, during which Azarenka injured her ankle. She kept playing, but appeared to be in pain and was visibly distraught. Radwanska later said she “lost a lot of respect” for the 22-year-old Belarusian because her behavior wasn’t a good image for women’s tennis.

“I actually never had a problem with her,” Azarenka said Tuesday. “She’s a great player, great girl, so nothing there is to discuss.”

Hampton earned her first win against a top-20 player when she beat Jelena Jankovic in the second round and the 22-year-old from Auburn, Ala., was having her best tour-level results yet when she fell down early in the third set.

“She was really hitting the ball very well, very consistent, good serve and moving very well,” Radwanska said. “I just noticed when she fell down. It’s always tough, especially that you can’t really have medical timeout for that. It’s tough to come back.”

Other winners were No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga; No. 7 Marion Bartoli; No. 8 Li Na; and 18th-seeded Angelique Kerber, who beat American Christina McHale in a third-set tiebreaker.

The Russian set a world record of 16 feet, 5¼ inches meters last month and failed to improve that after clinching gold. It was Isinbayeva’s fourth indoor world title but her first in four years. Over the same period, she also lost her world outdoor title.

“I was waiting for this victory like a mother is waiting to give birth to her baby,” Isinbayeva said. “The last three years showed me how important it is for me to win.”

The U.S. team won 10 gold medals, two better than the previous record. And several times, the toughest competition an American faced was another American.

In the women’s long jump, Brittney Reese jumped a championship record 23 feet, 8¾ inches on her last attempt to push American teammate Janay Deloach to silver at 22-10¾ and become the first back-to-back winner in the event.

It bodes well for a great show at the London Olympics. No other country had more than two golds.

Isinbayeva won the title at the Atakoy Arena with a height of 15-9, which she cleared with the ease she has so often shown during her career.

While others struggled, she covered herself in towels and waited.

“I am not really surprised that I only needed two attempts, two jumps to win,” Isinbayeva said after winning Russia’s only gold of the championships.

She now goes for the defense of the most precious medal of all — the Olympic gold. She will be seeking her third straight title in London, an unprecedented feat. No woman in track and field has managed to win three individual Olympic golds in three successive games.

While Isinbayeva regained her winning form, Meseret Defar felt what it’s like to lose.

The Ethiopian fell short of becoming the first woman to win five straight world indoor titles when Hellen Obiri of Kenya came from behind on the final lap to win the women’s 3,000 meters.

“I didn’t expect it. I am confused,” Defar said.

Liu Xiang was another favorite who lost during the final session of the three-day event, coming up short in the 60 hurdles against Aries Merritt, who added to a banner championships for the United States.

In the absence of defending champion Dayron Robles, Liu was supposed to win easily, but was left chasing Merritt all the way.

The United States also got gold from Bernard Lagat in the 3,000 and Will Claye in the triple jump . The men’s 4×400 relay team crossed the line first but was later disqualified.

Lagat won his third 3,000 world indoor title, breaking free with 100 meters to go to beat Kenyan rivals Augustine Choge and Edwin Soi.

Mo Farah was the favorite, but he failed to get on the medal stand and finished fourth. The Briton beat Lagat in a stirring 5,000 finish at the world outdoor championships in August.

At 37, Lagat still has the finishing kick of runners half his age.

“It is not dying away,” he said.

Lagat said he thought to himself: “I am going to stay here because those guys are strong.”

In the most exciting finish of the championships in the women’s 4×400 relay, 400 champion Sanya Richards-Ross came back from fourth place with 200 meters to go and missed gold by just .01 seconds when Britain’s Perri Shakes-Drayton threw herself across the line first.

It was almost as close in the women’s 60 meters when Veronica Campbell-Brown came back in the final 10 meters to give Jamaica its first sprinting gold.

With a world-leading 7.01 seconds, Campbell-Brown beat Murielle Ahoure of Ivory Coast by .03.

The U.S. filed an appeal after the disqualification in the men’s 4×400 relay. The Americans were penalized for “exchanging positions before take-over.”

Britain moved up from silver to gold, while Trinidad and Tobago moved from bronze to silver and Russia took bronze.

Reese set a championship record of 23 feet, 8¾ inches on her last attempt to push teammate Janay Deloach to silver at 22-10¾. Shara Proctor took bronze with a British record of 22-7¼.

“I decided to get my confidence up and get the crowd involved,” Reese said of her final attempt. “My coach told me to go and get it, and I went out and got it. I had to go out and bust the big one.”

In 1934, Rachel Schwartz, who spoke Hebrew, Arabic, English, French, German, Turkish and Russian, held degrees in chemistry and education, and was famous in Jerusalem for being the first Jewish woman to own and drive her own car around town, got in her beloved Morris Minor and drove her 17-year-old daughter Ruth to Moshav Nahalal’s agricultural school.

“Did you go there for love?” Ruth, who would soon after marry the moshav’s most famous son Moshe Dayan, is asked today. “Not at all,” replies Ruth, who turned 95 last week. “In fact I left many loves behind, poor souls. I went there to fulfill my dream of milking cows.”

Dayan had, actually, never seen a cow before she set off to Nahalal. After all, the daughter of intellectuals had lived in London between the ages of two and 11, and then landed in Jerusalem’s rarefied Rehavia neighborhood, where she attended the prestigious Gymnasia Rehavia school. Cows were few and far between. “You could fairly say,” she will admit, “that I was a little scared of them.”

It’s a sunny Thursday morning, and Dayan is sitting down for brunch with Agriculture Minister Orit Noked and dozens of Israel’s female dairy farmers in Be’er Ya’akov, a local council in central Israel founded in 1907 by Jewish immigrants from Dagestan.

“Of course we do!” the ladies call out in unison.

“By hand?” Dayan presses on, cocking an eyebrow.

“We milk the goats,” someone offers. “Or when something goes wrong with the machinery,” another pipes in, taking a bite of couscous salad.

Much has changed in Israel’s dairy farm scene over the years. In the 1890s, the combined herds of all Jewish settlers were said to number 774, all of the local breed – a very small cow with yields of between 300 and 1,000 liters a year.

When Dayan arrived in Nahalal, there was no electricity, let alone milking machinery. Her first unenviable job was to take care of the sick cows, of which, she says, there were always far too many.

Today, following years of research, breeding and investment in the sector, Israel is the highest milk producer per cow in the world, despite the desert landscape, heat and lack of water. The country has close to 1,200 dairy farms, and its cows – mostly crosses between local breeds and Dutch imports – are internationally renowned for their record-breaking high yields: 11,600 liters per year on average. The very best of the best, the cows of Kibbutz Sa’ad in the northern Negev, are said to produce an astonishing 16-17,000 liters per year.

A government committee soon recommended, among other measures, controlling dairy prices, instituting economic milk market reforms and – gasp, choke – enabling the import of hard cheeses and powdered milk products. A dairy ladies’ morale-boosting brunch was definitely in order.

Nurit Levin is a third generation dairy farmer who, together with her husband and four children, runs a farm of 60 cows on Kfar Yehezkel, a moshav in the Jezreel Valley. She sells the milk onward, as many others here do, to Tnuva, Israel largest dairy products manufacturer, which was boycotted last summer as part of an offshoot protest after it refused to lower its prices.

Levin’s grandparents founded Kfar Yehezkel with a group of friends when they arrived from Russia in the early 1920s, and were given a cow each by the local Jewish authorities. In the 1960s, her parents switched over to using cow milking pumps and then a decade ago, under the watch of Levin, who holds a masters degree in computer science, the farm became one of the first in the country to introduce a robotic milking system.

Most of those gathered attest that they are just getting by. And the new recommended government measures, they believe, will end up harming them most – not the big manufacturers or the supermarket chains – causing more than 400 small family dairies to close.

“I might have brought in robotics, but I still interact plenty with the animals,” she says, describing how she wakes up at dawn to feed the cows, takes care of their health and cleans up after them. Her choice of profession, she says, is a lifestyle one. “You have to care. You have to want and to enjoy this life.”

“We all get very attached to our cows,” agrees Dayan, who ended up settling in Nahalal for 15 years after Moshe, who approached her to ask for English tutoring on her first week there, proposed less than a year later. Subsequently, through the years her husband served as Israel’s chief of staff, defense and then foreign minister, as well as after her divorce from him in 1971 and his death a decade later. Dayan found herself drawn to other pursuits. She founded Israel’s ethnic craft and fashion house Maskit, and has worked on behalf of underprivileged women, Jewish and Palestinian alike, as well as immigrants and Bedouin.

“I’m not nostalgic for those days per se, but I do miss the cows,” reflects Dayan, going back in time to tell stories of Kochava, who was a particularly difficult cow, and Sikarika, a gentle sort.

“On the day of our marriage,” Dayan tells the women, “the so-called Jerusalem aristocratic set all came up, by bus. We filled the washing tubs with corn on the cob and the Arabs came from the nearby villages, and friends came from Kadouri by bicycle, and we all danced the Debka.”

Under the wedding canopy she wore a Russian peasant dress, and Moshe donned his felt Russian cap.

“Right after the ceremony, when we were sitting down under the walnut trees, I heard the cows calling out to me,” Dayan continues, relaying how she changed into her work shorts and set out to the sheds to do the milking. Soon, everyone followed, and the whole party moved over. “That is where I liked being,” she says. “I didn’t mind the smell at all.”

The brunch is winding down and Dafna Koren, a petite women in a checkered shirt and boots who started a dairy farm of 40 cows on the Golan Heights, shyly comes over to say hello. “I really could relate to your stories,” she tells Dayan.

Koren, who grew up in Petah Tikva and has a degree in social science, always dreamed, for reasons neither her friends nor parents ever quite understood, of being a goat herder. “Cows were really my second choice,” she admits and then shrugs, pushing her daughter, who has joined her for the event, forward to shake Dayan’s hand.

“But I ended up a dairy farmer,” concludes Koren. “And I loved it. It’s where I belong now.”

Whenever kids are involved, dating takes even more careful consideration about who you let in your life and why. It’s one thing to date wholly inappropriate people and have a casual fling when it’s just two consenting adults. When one or both of you have children, you should probably know with some degree of certainty – that the person you are seeing is a viable romantic partner. It also helps when they aren’t clinically insane.

I know of two friends that are singles dating parents right now. They are going through vastly different experiences trying to navigate new romances with people who have children. It makes it pretty clear that the way you handle challenges makes a world of difference.

While one relationship seems to be solid, the other is rocky and full of drama. I can only speculate, but it seems that it’s a maturity thing – or lack thereof.

Singles dating parent can be a really rewarding experience, especially when everyone agrees the kids come first. A lot of people actually struggle with this and I think it ends up being a deal breaker a lot of times.

In a room packed with college students, the Dating Doctor broke down some of what he says are life’s most important lessons in love.

“Number one never mistake infatuation for love. The person who’s least invested has all of the control in a relationship. It’s the person who loves, cares or tries the least who has all of the control. So if the other person you are with isn’t putting in any effort and you keep doing it, why would they ever do anything in return,” Coleman said.

And with plenty of bad pickup lines and corny jokes, he helped an audience that was more than open for suggestions.

Jefferson Community College student Ben Green said, “I definitely picked up a few more ways to make things better.”

And for all of you who are afraid of making that first step in finding love, the Dating Doctor says it’s important to not sit by and watch love pass you by.

Coleman said, “If there’s someone in your life you are interested in, somehow get the point across. Make eye contact, smile, say hello, appear interested. Because they could end up dating someone the next day and not know you romantically and I think that’s a shame.”

Love just might be waiting if you give it a try.

It was in May 2010, Sophia confirmed that she and Nichols have been an item for at least four years and it looks like Sophia Bush broke it off with Nichols – who plays her husband – “because she didn’t think he was the one.”

The source added: “She’s moving on.”

Since she will soon be working on her new CBS comedy pilot Partners, she will now have the chance to date another co-star.

OK! magazine report the ‘Only Way Is Essex’ star will be discussing the matter with police today after thugs posted petrol bombs through the shop’s door and smashed up the windows at around 10pm last night, (15.02.12).

Lauren Goodger opened the salon – named Lauren’s Way – yesterday morning, (15.02.12) but the store was vandalised last night after she had closed up shop following her first day.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the vicious incident, although the people living above the store were evacuated by police.

Lauren Goodger tweeted her excitement following the grand opening yesterday, posting: “Thanks for everyone who have come into the shop today! Very sweet! We are officially opened press launch next week x x [sic]“

Demi Moore is on the “road to recovery”.

The 49-year-old actress was hospitalised last month after suffering a seizure and is rumoured to be seeking treatment for an “eating disorder and addiction issues”, but Rumer Willis – Demi’s eldest daughter with ex-husband Bruce Willis – insists all the family “believe” she will get better.

She told German website tz-online: “Of course the situation weighs heavily on me.

“My mother is on the road to recovery. It’s slow going but we believe in her.”

Zac Efron, a close friend of Rumer, 23, recently admitted while the ‘House Bunny’ actress is finding her mother’s difficulties “tough”, she is coping well with the situation.

He said: “It’s tough, but I think she’s all right.

“I’ve been told the sensation is truly like you’re drowning. I didn’t want to have a go. If my character was waterboarded, I would have done it. At least that’s what I like to think. But, no. I don’t have a go. It was difficult to watch. Horrible.”
